There was a small debate in the office on what the "2" in MR2 actually stood for.
Being a regular reader of Jalopnik and an Opponaut, of course I knew the answer.
Mid-Engine Runabout 2-Seater.
BOOM! Thanks everyone!
Edit: It's actually Midship Runabout 2-Seater

I may regret this but what were the other theories?

1. It is for the engine size
2. It is the second iteration of a car
3. It's for two dudes (Mr. + Mr. = MR2) who like riding together

I'm still waiting for Toyota to email me back but the answer I found was on the official Toyota UK blog which is good enough for me.

what the. F means a runabout
![]() 02/12/2015 at 08:41 |

Well, it also means Mid engine/RWD 2 seater... But yes runabout is apparently also a valid answer. Though MR usually refers to the type of car.
FF: Front engine/FWD
FR: Front Engine/RWD
MF, MR, RR...etc, you see the drill.
Not sure what "runabout" actually means??

"Toyota MR2, a contraction of Midship Runabout 2-seater"
That's directly from the Toyota UK blog, I linked it above for everyone to check out!
But yeah, no idea what Runabout is all about.

It's the band Whitechapel's logo which is the Tennessee centerpiece only with a sawblade instead of a circle. And no I am not from Tennessee.

Yes, that's the original definition, but the "legend" want that after all sales rep defined it as "Mid-engine-RWD 2 seater", Toyota accepted "that it also means that" lol... But yes, the one and supposedly only definiton is Midship Runabout 2 seater. General public decided otherwise though :)
